Utilities concession renewed

The SMEG concession is renewed for 20 more years.

On 18th December Jean Paul Proust and Bernard Prades, president of Societe Monegasque de l'Electricite et du Gaz (SMEG) signed a new 20 year concession for electricity and gas supply in the Principality. SMEG is majority owned by French company GDF Suez, which has been supplying electricity to Monaco since 1890:

  • GDF Suez, 64%
  • state owned, 20%
  • EDF, 15%

The Monaco company has 3 key areas of development: service quality, security of energy supply, and contribution to Monaco's environmental policies.
Service Quality - SMEG plans to use intelligent computers to help manage consumption.
Energy Supply - A 63,000 volts sub-station in the St Devotte valley is planned for 2013.
Environmental Policies - A sustainable development fund has been created for investments in renewable energy, initially likely to be photovoltaic, but also to buy sources of green energy created in Monaco.
