Summer sales started yesterday

Retailers are optimistic.

The day before the sales started, Pierre Brezzo, president of the Union des Commercants et Artisans de Monaco (UCAM) spoke to Nice Matin. He commented on economic difficulties and the problems caused by bad weather at the beginning of the season. However, most traders are optimistic for Monaco's summer sales, which start a few days ahead of the rest of the region.

Sales tomorrow

Sales have started

With the first day of the sales falling on a Sunday, the question of Sunday trading once again rears its head. The Government admitted in December 2009 that it was already working on legislation, and the issue was discussed at a public meeting of the National Council. By allowing opening on Sundays during summer, the Government concluded that 7/7 trading for all outlets may not be such a great success. But there is concern that Monaco will lose shoppers to Nice and Menton. It's likely that any legislation would allow traders to decide for themselves if they wish to open or not.

Towards a law for Sunday trading

Sunday in Monaco is shopping day

The question of Sunday trading has been debated in many countries including France. Invariably there are those such as religious groups and unionists who argue that it's a backward step for society and the family life of workers. On the opposite side are those who see it as an opportunity to develop the economy. According to a survey carried out last year by Opinion Way, out of a sample of 2626, 63% of French consumers said they would welcome Sunday opening, whereas 58% said they would oppose it if they themselves had to work. The arguments have all been raised before in countries such as the UK, which introduced legislation to allow Sunday trading in 1994.
