Monaco Scientific Centre's 50th anniversary

Yesterday evening the Centre Scientifique de Monaco (CSM) [1] celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Founded 50 years ago by Prince Rainier III, the CSM has become recognized throughout the world for its research on corals. Yesterday's festivities were marked by the signing of a convention with the French CNRS [2] to participate in a European laboratory, where the biology of corals is to be studied.

In September, the CSM took part in the Future Ocean Symposium in Kiel, where a day was devoted to coral reefs. Professor Denis Allemand, Scientific Director of the CSM presented a plenary session on coral physiology [3].

As part of a partnership with the USA based National Science Foundation (NSF), Dr Michael Holcomb of the MIT Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute is to carry out research into corals at CSM over the next 2 years.
